Who Will Speak for Me? Webinar on Planning for the Future Without Children, April 8

Why Solo Agers Must Plan Ahead for a Secure and Fulfilling Future

As we age, the importance of planning for the future becomes paramount, especially for Solo Agers. These are individuals who may not have children or a partner to rely on in their later years. Solo Agers face unique challenges and have to take proactive steps to ensure their health, financial security, and social well-being as they age. In this blog, we’ll explore why planning ahead is crucial for Solo Agers and how communities like Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor offer a peaceful, supportive environment for a fulfilling future.

What Are Solo Agers? Solo Agers are individuals who, by choice or circumstance, do not have a close family or support network to depend on as they get older. This lifestyle can lead to a variety of challenges, including isolation, lack of assistance with daily tasks, and limited emergency support. According to AARP, the number of Solo Agers is increasing, and experts predict this trend will continue as more people choose to remain single or delay having children. AARP’s Solo Agers Resource offers insights into this growing demographic.

Why Planning Ahead Is Critical for Solo Agers
Solo Agers face unique risks, but with careful planning, they can set themselves up for a peaceful, secure retirement. Here are some essential areas to focus on:

1. Healthcare and Medical Support:
Solo Agers should prioritize their health care, ensuring they have a plan in place for medical emergencies. This includes researching long-term care options and finding medical professionals who can offer regular check-ups and emergency care if needed. Understanding insurance coverage is vital – especially long-term care insurance, which can help mitigate the costs of future medical needs.

2. Financial Security:
Financial planning is critical for everyone, but it takes on even more significance for Solo Agers. Without the support of family, Solo Agers need to have a solid financial plan to ensure their assets last throughout their retirement. This includes saving for healthcare, housing, and daily living expenses. It’s also wise to work with a financial planner who can help manage your retirement accounts, investments, and create a budget for future needs.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers tips for financial planning in later years.

3. Housing Options:
Solo Agers need to carefully consider their housing options for retirement. Whether it’s remaining in their own home, downsizing, or exploring senior living communities, it’s important to ensure the space is safe, accessible, and supportive. Communities like Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor provide excellent retirement options with the added benefit of social engagement, ensuring residents have everything they need without feeling isolated. With on-site medical care and supportive amenities, Heron’s Key ensures that Solo Agers thrive in their later years.

4. Social Connections and Community Support:
Isolation is a significant concern for Solo Agers. Finding a community where they feel connected and supported is key. Participating in social activities, volunteering, or living in a retirement community with like-minded individuals can help reduce loneliness and increase overall well-being.
Research by AARP shows that maintaining strong social ties improves mental and physical health, which is why connecting with a supportive community is vital for Solo Agers.

Mental Wellness in Honor of World Mental Health Day

October 10th is World Mental Health Day which raises awareness of mental health issues and aims to support those struggling with their mental health.

Mental health in senior living is critically important and Heron’s Key makes it a top priority to ensure residents are fulfilled mentally, spiritually and physically.

While statics show an increase in mental health issues, feelings of isolation and overall loneliness in individuals who retire, there are many ways to mitigate these emotions.

Socialization

Socialization is one of the most important ways to support mental wellbeing. Daily interaction with friends, family, staff members and neighbors can greatly increase a sense of belonging.

Heron’s Key also has dozens of resident-led interest groups that connect residents with neighbors who have similar hobbies. Groups meet regularly to participate in activities with one another which makes this a great way to form meaningful connections.

There are also daily activities, classes, spiritual programs, fitness opportunities and more for residents who prefer a pop-in activity.

Whether it is a group, an activity, inviting a neighbor to have a meal, or smiling at a staff member in the community, social interaction makes a positive impact on mental health.

Physical Activity

Daily physical activity is also a great way to support mental health especially for those who deal with anxiety and depression. Exercise can increase endorphins, reduce cortisol levels, and increase blood flow, all of which prove beneficial to both the mind and the body.

Heron’s Key offers dozens of ways to promote physical activity. There are group fitness classes each week ranging from yoga to Zumba and everything in between. There are also on-campus gyms with cardio equipment and weights for residents to use in their own time. In addition to the fitness classes and facilities, Gig Harbor is a beautiful place to go outside and take daily walks around the community.

Regardless of the activity selected, at least thirty minutes of daily exercise has proven to be beneficial especially for maintaining mental health during retirement.

Charitable Giving

Lastly, community involvement and charitable giving is a great way to support mental health. Volunteering has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, combat depression, and increase physical health, while also doing something for the greater good of the community.

Volunteering or charitable giving also helps give individuals a sense of purpose. If you donate time, money or resources to a cause near and dear to your heart, it can increase personal satisfaction and boost self-esteem.

There are dozens of ways to get involved in the community or with local nonprofit organizations. The Heron’s Key Scholarship Group and the Heron’s Key Resident Association are two great places to start if exploring ways to give is of interest.

By doing some of these or all of these, residents are able to decrease the chances of mental health issues.

However, many mental health issues need professional intervention and treatment should go beyond socialization and wellness. If you ever feel the need to talk to someone, therapists and mental health professionals are available at Heron’s Key to offer support.

This World Mental Health Day is a great time to check in with your own mental wellbeing and check in with your loved ones.
